We're often asked: "What's the best Shopify theme?". Our answer is normally another question: "Best for what?".
There isn't one Shopify theme that's universally best. A theme that's excellent for a fashion brand may be completely wrong for an antique jewellery store with hundreds of one-off products.
Shopify's Theme Store contains free and premium options covering different catalogue sizes, industries and feature requirements. The important part is choosing based on functionality rather than simply choosing the homepage demo you like most.
Don't Choose a Theme Based on the Demo Homepage
This is probably our biggest piece of advice. Demo stores are designed to make themes look attractive.
They normally contain:
- Professional photography
- Carefully written copy
- Perfectly coordinated colours
- Ideal product images
- Beautiful video
- Carefully selected products
When your own content is added, the result can look completely different. Instead, investigate the underlying functionality and features of the theme.
What Should You Look For?
Product catalogue size
A store selling ten products has different requirements from one selling 10,000.
Larger stores may benefit particularly from:
- Mega menus
- Strong search
- Collection filtering
- Quick buy
- Swatches
- Promotional navigation
- Product recommendations
Product type
Different products need different interfaces. Fashion may require strong size and colour options. Furniture might require dimensions and substantial imagery. Jewellery may depend heavily on photography and specifications. Food brands may need subscription, bundle or ingredient information.
Start with the product.
Product page functionality
Look carefully at the theme's product template.
Check:
- Image galleries
- Variant selectors
- Sticky Add to Cart
- Accordions
- Product information
- Complementary products
- Videos
- Size guides
- Product badges
Changing a homepage is normally relatively straightforward. Reengineering a complicated product template can involve considerably more development.
Free vs Premium Shopify Themes
Free Shopify themes can be excellent. For straightforward stores, they're often completely sufficient.
Premium themes can become worthwhile when they provide useful functionality that would otherwise require custom development or apps.
The correct question isn't: "Which premium theme looks nicest?"
It's: "Which theme gets us closest to the functionality the business actually needs?"
Themes We Regularly Work With
Over the years, we've worked with numerous Shopify themes across different types of stores.
Themes such as Prestige, Broadcast, Expanse, Pipeline and Be Yours all approach ecommerce slightly differently.
We're not interested in recommending one theme universally.
We look at:
- Existing functionality
- Catalogue size
- Design requirements
- Customisation requirements
- Apps
- Product structure
- Navigation requirements
- Long-term maintenance
What Happens When the Theme Doesn't Do Something You Need?
You generally have three options.
1. Customise the theme
Often the best solution. Shopify Liquid, CSS and JavaScript can be used to modify existing functionality or create new sections. This is where Shopify Web Designers come in handy.
2. Install an app
Appropriate when an app provides sophisticated functionality that would be inefficient to build from scratch.
3. Choose another theme
Sometimes the simplest answer. If you haven't started development yet and the theme fundamentally doesn't suit the project, changing themes can be much more sensible than fighting against it.
Why We Don't Recommend Building Everything From Scratch
Fully custom Shopify theme development can make sense for businesses with highly specialised needs. But it isn't automatically superior.
A reputable commercial Shopify theme has already had considerable development invested into areas such as responsive layouts, accessibility, browser compatibility and ecommerce functionality.
For many businesses, the ideal approach is:
Strong theme foundation + professional customisation + targeted custom development.
That can produce an extremely distinctive website without reinventing every component.
Our Favourite Theme Is the One That Fits the Project
That's genuinely our answer. Don't buy a Shopify theme because somebody called it "the best Shopify theme in 2026".
Choose it because its architecture supports your catalogue, customers and commercial requirements.
Then customise it until it feels like your business rather than the demo store.
